Bangkok is currently underwater. All 50 districts have just been declared disaster zones after two days of nonstop rain, and I was out filming it as it happened.
This isn’t a “what if Bangkok floods” thinkpiece. This is happening right now, today, September 26, 2026. Canal levels across the city hit critical territory, major roads turned into rivers, and Governor Chadchart expanded the flood declaration from three districts to all fifty in one move.

What’s Actually Happening Right Now
After two straight days of heavy rain, Bangkok’s canal network hit critical and rising levels, and the drainage system simply couldn’t keep up. City officials confirmed the situation is serious enough that the flood disaster declaration now covers every single district, not just the usual low-lying suspects.
That’s the kind of thing that gets your attention if you’ve lived here a while, because Bangkok floods every rainy season, but an all-50-districts declaration is a different level of seriousness.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has told residents in low-lying areas to move belongings to higher ground and secure valuables. Cell broadcast alerts went out across the city, and authorities say they’re continuing to monitor rainfall and coordinate with local agencies as water levels shift hour to hour.
Roads and Areas to Avoid
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration flagged 21 roads as flood-affected, with the worst of it concentrated on some of the city’s biggest arteries:
- Sukhumvit Road
- Rama 9 Road
- Ratchadaphisek Road
- Phahon Yothin Road
- Vibhavadi Rangsit Road
Eastern Bangkok has been particularly hard hit. If any of these are on your route today, check a live traffic app before you commit, because conditions are changing fast and a road that’s passable at 9 am can be a different story by lunchtime.

What This Means If You’re Visiting or Living Here
A few schools and offices are shifting to work from home on Monday, and that’s usually a decent signal for how seriously the city is treating things. If you’re visiting, this isn’t a reason to cancel a Bangkok trip; floods like this tend to move through in a matter of days, but it is a reason to build in flexibility.
Skip the outdoor plans in the worst-hit areas, keep tuk-tuk and taxi rides for the raised roads when you can, and honestly, just pack a dry pair of socks.
If you’re a local, you already know the drill: sandbags at the shopfront, phone charged for the alerts, and a healthy respect for how fast a soi can turn into a river.
